Klondyke Fiddle School Dawson City, Yukon, Canada |
|
The School |
| The Klondyke Fiddle School idea was hatched in Cape Breton in 2003. Ward and Peter met at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts & Crafts in Cape Breton. Peter was impressed with the way the College fit within a tourist economy ~ a beautiful part of Canada celebrating a great music tradition. It just had Dawson City written all over it! Back then, Ward offered to come North and help establish the School. |

Two years later, Doug, Ashley and Peter decided it was time to 'test the waters' and see if a Fiddle School in Dawson was feasible. Ward got the call and the 2005 Klondyke Fiddle School was initiated. Year 1 featured fiddle lessons with Ward, a school concert, and an outdoor concert. The week ended with a blow-out performance by Ward, sitting in with a local band named Fish Head Stew at Bombay Peggy's Pub. | ![]() |

If you play fiddle ...you need dancers! On Ward's recommendation, East Coast step dance instruction and a square dance were added to the 2006 activities. An outdoor concert was scheduled for the School in an open stage venue at the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival. Combined with the regular lessons and a school concert, Year 2 brought the Klondyke Fiddle School a major step forward. |
| With growth comes more interest and the need for more organization and marketing. The success of the first two years showed that the School was indeed a viable idea for Dawson and feedback indicated that it should go 'bigger' with year-round planning and programming, plus a larger workshop schedule. Wow! |
| So here we are in our third year! We've added guitar, piano, songwriting, & beginner violin workshops, have three new instructors, a second square dance, and more guest performers ~ including the great 'Bill Stevens' from Alaska! With goals to increase student participation, encourage greater local sponsorship, and generate more community partnerships, we're confident that the Klondyke Fiddle School offers a little something for everyone! |
